Key Findings

In the present study, a randomized, multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted to investigate the effects of n-3 PUFA supplements, both marine and plant-based, on glycemic traits in Chinese type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients. The results showed that marine n-3 PUFA supplements taken for 180 days potentially improved glycemic control in Chinese T2D patients. The authors not that there no convincing evidence showing that marine n-3 PUFA are superior to plant-based n-3 PUFA. More studies with longer follow-up duration and larger sample size in Chinese populations are needed to confirm the results of the present study.

Abstract

Scope: To investigate the effects of n-3 fatty acid supplements, both marine and plant-based, on glycemic traits in Chinese type 2 diabetes patients. We designed a randomized control trial to investigate the effect of fish oil and flaxseed oil supplements on glucose-related traits in 185 Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes. We randomly assigned the patients to daily take fish oil, flaxseed oil and corn oil capsules (as a control) for 180 days (4 capsules/day). The trial found that fish oil supplements may improve both of the glycemic control and lipid profiles among Chinese type 2 diabetic patients.

may improve both of the glycemic control and lipid profiles among Chinese type 2 diabetic patients.
